Dietary supplements are more popular now than ever before, and there is no denying the fact that omega-3 fish oil supplements are among the most popular of them all. Do they really deserve their position near the top of the list?
Omega-3 Supplements and the FDA
One thing which we can not overlook is the fact that omega-3 supplementation has been officially endorsed by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is notoriously picky about what they do or do not endorse, but they have issued a public health notice stating that the use of fish oil supplements can reduce the risk of a person developing coronary heart disease. In fact, the FDA's News Release concern omega-3 supplementation was published way back in 2004 already.
This official FDA approval has clearly helped to fuel the current popularity of fish oil supplements, but many people will also have been affected by the long list of other reported health benefits.
Choosing the Best Fish Oil Gels
One quick and easy way to stock up on fish oil supplements would be to shop online at some of the very popular sites where you can literally find anything you are looking for. However, shopping for supplements on sites like those is not always a very good idea unless you are only concerned about prices.
Anyone can order supplements in bulk and then sell them under their own individual brand names. A lot of these supplements could be very poor quality, and if the truth be known, the people who rebrand and resell probably have no real idea concerning what ingredients have been added. Not too long ago we heard about some manufacturers in China adding melamine to baby formula. I do not know how you feel about it, but I personally would not feel comfortable taking supplements that have been manufactured by such manufacturers for example.
Let us assume that there are 150 sellers out there who all get their supplies from the same manufacturer. If this manufacturer is making very high quality supplements, then there will be at least 150 sellers selling high quality supplements. But, what if the manufacturer is turning out poor quality, or even even contaminated supplements? If that is the case then you have 150 sellers selling supplements that you really do not want to be taking.
The problem with the above scenario is the fact that those 150 sellers do not really know what quality their supplements are. In fact, they probably are not even interested. I just can not help wondering how you can order a batch of supplements; have them packaged and branded, and then sell them for less than you would expect to pay at a local supermarket? I mean, how is it even possible for them to make any profit?
My gut instinct tells me that those samples of supplements must surely contain the cheapest fish oil money can buy. If you are serious about getting the best fish oil pills or gels, then my advice would be to get them from a company that manufactures their own supplements.
Not All Fish Oil Is Equal
Fish oil can be obtained from any species of fish, but not all fish oil is equal. Oil from some types of fish has an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, while the oil from some other species may not contain much at all. So, once you have found a potential supplier, your next step will be to determine what sort of fish oil is being used for making their supplies. Ideally, the oil in your supplements should come from one or more of the following types of fish:
* Salmon (wild caught)
The Origin of the Oil
Okay, so you've found a supplier who sees to fit the bill and you know they only use oil which has been harvested from Tuna for example, but now you need to find out where those tuna are being caught. I mean, you would not want oil from fish that have been taken off the coast of Japan, near the site of the recent nuclear power station disaster.
I'm not going to point fingers, but the coastal waters surrounding some countries have dangerously high levels of pollution. Again, I'm not going to point fingers and I'm not going to make recommendations, but I do really believe that this is something you need to take into consideration as well before you go ahead and order your fish oil supplements.
